School Admission Lottery System Cancelled by Government
The government has cancelled the lottery-based admission system for students from Class One to Class Nine in both government and private secondary schools.
The announcement came through a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Monday (March 16).
However, the government has not yet finalized the new process for student admission. Authorities said consultations with relevant stakeholders will be held before introducing a new system.
Previously, school admissions were conducted through a lottery instead of written examinations.
The lottery system was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021 academic year, admissions for all classes were conducted through a lottery to avoid large gatherings and ensure public health safety.
The same process continued in later years. This year, students for Class One to Class Nine were also selected through the lottery system.
New Admission Policy Expected from 2027
According to the official notification, the current lottery-based admission process will remain in place until 2026.
From the 2027 academic year, the admission system for government and private secondary schools will change.
The government plans to cancel the lottery system and introduce a new admission method based on opinions from education stakeholders.
The notification also said that previous admission policies issued on November 13, 2025 and November 19, 2025 have been officially cancelled.
Education officials believe the new policy will aim to ensure a fair and transparent admission system for school students across the country.
