  • Commerce, Industry, Jute and Textiles Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said achieving Bangladesh’s 10,000-megawatt solar power target could significantly reduce the electricity crisis facing industries. He emphasized expanding solar power production along with storage facilities.

Speaking to journalists in Sylhet on Saturday, the minister said Bangladesh can make optimal use of solar energy for around three and a half to four hours a day. With storage facilities, the electricity could also be used during evening peak hours.

According to the minister, meeting the government’s 10,000-megawatt solar power production target would help ease load-shedding in the industrial sector. A framework is also being prepared to use rice husk and coal as alternative fuels alongside gas at industrial plots.

Muktadir said the CMSME sector currently contributes around 34 percent to the national economy, with the government aiming to raise that contribution to 50 percent. Environment-friendly businesses requiring lower investment are also being prioritized.

The minister also highlighted investment interest from business representatives from India and the United States. He said the government is considering proposals aimed at creating a more investment-friendly environment, while solar power production could play an important role in improving industrial energy security.
