  • The Democratic United Front held a protest rally over rising fuel and essential commodity prices, gas, electricity and water shortages, and concerns about law and order. The rally was held in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday, September 29.

    The rally was chaired by alliance coordinator Abdullah Kafi Ratan, while central leader of BASAD (Mahbub), Moinuddin Chowdhury Liton, conducted the programme. During the Democratic United Front protest, leaders presented their views on rising living costs, public services and security.

    Abdullah Kafi Ratan alleged that higher fuel prices were increasing transport and production costs and affecting the prices of essential goods. He also claimed that shortages of gas, electricity and water were adding to public hardship.

    He further alleged that people were not receiving adequate and uninterrupted public services despite paying regular bills. Claims about the cost of privately purchased electricity were also raised at the rally. These statements represent the alliance’s political claims and are presented as such.

    Ratan also criticized Bangladesh’s purchase of 25 Boeing aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Reports have put the value of the 25-aircraft orders at more than Tk70,000 crore. Government officials, however, have rejected claims of a hidden agenda behind the Boeing purchase and said fleet expansion was based on the aviation sector’s needs. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

    Speakers at the rally also raised concerns about law and order and called for stronger measures to ensure public safety. They linked rising living costs and concerns over public services with broader economic and social pressures.

    The protesters demanded withdrawal of the fuel price increase, effective measures to control essential commodity prices, action against hoarding and market manipulation, and long-term solutions to gas, electricity and water shortages. They also called for law-enforcement institutions to operate without political influence.

    The Democratic United Front has announced several recent programmes around economic, security and public-interest issues. Earlier reports said the alliance had planned a September 29 demonstration and memorandum submission at Bangladesh Bank. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

    The programme ended with a protest procession from the National Press Club area, joined by leaders, activists and supporters of the alliance.
