বাংলাDhaka District Commissioner Farida Khanam has said that children with special needs can become valuable assets to the country if they receive proper care, education, training and suitable opportunities.
She made the remarks on Tuesday, August 25, at an event marking the 10th anniversary of ‘Maya’r Bandhan’, an organisation working for children with disabilities, held at the Bangladesh Police Liberation War Museum in Rajarbagh, Dhaka. Food and gifts were distributed among the children.
Farida Khanam said disability cannot determine the limits of a person’s intelligence, talent or potential. Referring to renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, she said physical limitations cannot stop a person’s intellectual abilities and dreams.
She said children with special needs have enormous potential. If society focuses on their abilities and talents instead of their limitations and provides education, training and necessary support, they can become a source of pride for their families, communities and the country.
The district commissioner said children with special needs do not need pity but respect, love and opportunities. Families, society and the state must work together to create an environment where their talents can develop. Proper care and opportunities can help special needs children unlock their potential.
Praising the decade-long work of Maya’r Bandhan, Farida said the organisation has been caring for these children and working to secure their future. She also highlighted the importance of its initiative to establish permanent and secure accommodation for children with special needs.
The district commissioner assured financial assistance for the welfare of autistic and intellectually disabled children and said suitable cases could be considered for allocation of government-owned land. The event was attended by Maya’r Bandhan President Fowzia Yasmin, parents, organisation members and special needs children.
According to the organisers, 96 children with special needs attended the event. Among them, 16 were orphans and 11 had only their mothers. Food and gifts were distributed among the children.
