Opposition Leader Highlights Significance of Interim Government’s 133 Ordinances

The Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has formally requested a comprehensive debate in the National Parliament regarding the 133 Ordinances promulgated by the previous interim administration. On Sunday (April 5), during the second session of the first parliament sitting, he drew the Speaker’s attention to the matter. He argued that many of these ordinances, which are now being proposed for lapsing or replacement, are deeply connected to the “July Spirit” and public rights, necessitating a thorough review by the house.

Dr. Rahman pointed out that a special committee had already scrutinized the 133 Ordinances and submitted a report. He expressed concern that some of the ordinances marked for expiration are of immense public importance. “We have cross-checked the notices and found that the ordinances proposed to be lapsed are vital for the nation’s progress and the essence of the July uprising,” he stated, urging the Speaker to create an opportunity for open discussion before any final decisions are made on these 133 Ordinances.

Law Minister Issues Clarification and Amendment

In response to the 133 Ordinances debate, the Law Minister initially claimed that the new bills being introduced were separate from the interim government’s list. However, following the Asr prayer break, the Minister corrected his statement, acknowledging that the bills in question were indeed part of the 133 Ordinances. He assured the opposition that every ordinance would eventually be placed before Parliament as a bill, allowing for discussion during the first and second readings. The Speaker noted that approximately 93 bills need to be passed by April 9, and all members’ views would be considered in due course.

The move by the Opposition Leader signals a vigilant stance on legislative continuity and reform. As the 13th Parliament begins its journey, the fate of these 133 Ordinances remains a focal point of political discourse.
