Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, spokesperson for the NCP and former advisor to the interim government, has made a sensational claim regarding a “Deep State” conspiracy. During a special discussion on Independence Day, he revealed that powerful institutions, often referred to as the Deep State, offered the interim government a roadmap to remain in power until 2029. This offer included certain conditions and a strategic plan to facilitate their stay in office by sidelining major political opponents.
Strategy to Exclude BNP and Facilitate Long-Term Rule
Asif Mahmud detailed that the Deep State presented a strategy to keep BNP leaders out of the election process. He mentioned that since leaders like Tarique Rahman have existing convictions, the plan involved manipulating court dates to ensure they remained ineligible to contest. “They had the whole strategy ready—how to stay in power through a form of negotiation and settlement. But we did not agree to it,” the NCP spokesperson stated during the event on Thursday afternoon.
Commitment to Democracy and Resignation
Explaining why the interim government chose to resign, Asif Mahmud emphasized their commitment to democracy. He noted that they stepped down voluntarily to ensure the election’s credibility. However, he expressed disappointment that two high-ranking officials from the previous administration have been given ministerial ranks in the current government. He argued that such appointments reward those who previously damaged the level playing field, questioning the narrative of constitutional continuity that is now being used.
