A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for Lieutenant General (Retd.) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, the former Director General of DGFI. The order was passed by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Siddiq Azad on Thursday following an application by the Detective Branch (DB) of police. He was arrested late Wednesday night from a flat in the DOHS area of the capital in connection with a murder case filed at Mirpur Model Thana.
Allegations of Directing Attack on Protesters
According to the remand application, the case involves the death of Delwar Hossain during the student-led mass movement in 2024. It is alleged that on July 19, around 500 to 700 activists of the then-ruling party launched an armed attack on peaceful protesters in the Mirpur-10 area. Sheikh Mamun Khaled is accused of giving direct instructions for this attack, which resulted in Delwar Hossain being shot. Delwar later succumbed to his injuries on July 21 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Investigation Into the Mystery and Arms Recovery
The investigating officer, DB Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, argued that intensive interrogation is necessary to unearth the mystery behind the killing. The police aim to identify other suspects involved in the incident and recover the weapons used during the attack. The state prosecutor, Shamsudduha Sumon, confirmed the court’s decision, stating that the former military officer will be kept in DB custody for further questioning during the remand period.
