Inclusive Systems and GDP Goals: Education Investment Strategy
During a parliamentary session on Wednesday (April 8, 2026), Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted the government’s visionary Education Investment plans. Responding to a query from MP Md. Selim Reza, the PM emphasized that the administration aims to raise the education budget to 5% of the GDP, as outlined in the election manifesto. To achieve this, 43 specific areas have been identified for short, medium, and long-term implementation. The session was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom, where the Prime Minister reiterated that a quality-driven and life-oriented education system is the backbone of a developed nation.
The Education Investment roadmap includes significant welfare projects for primary students. The PM announced that 200,000 primary school students will receive free uniforms this fiscal year, with plans to expand the program nationwide. Additionally, to ensure student nutrition, the government intends to launch school feeding and mid-day meal programs across all sub-districts (upazilas) gradually. These steps are designed to reduce dropout rates and ensure that every child, regardless of their financial background, has access to basic necessities while pursuing their studies.
Digital Transformation: Edu-ID and Global Competitiveness
A major pillar of the current Education Investment is the digitalization of classrooms. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman revealed that ‘Edu-IDs’ will be provided to every student and teacher to create a unique digital identity. Furthermore, free Wi-Fi will be installed in 1,500 institutions, including colleges and universities, to bridge the digital divide. The ICT division is also set to provide specialized training in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Security, and Python programming within the next six months to prepare the new generation for global competition.
The Prime Minister also underscored the modernization of Madrasa and technical education. Within 180 days, free Wi-Fi will be activated in 2,336 technical and 8,232 Madrasa institutions. By making technical education compulsory at the secondary level, the government aims to create a skilled workforce.
