Sound System Glitch During National Anthem Creates Confusion in Parliament
✍️ A moment of confusion occurred in the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad when a sound system malfunction disrupted the playing of the national anthem as President Mohammad Shahabuddin entered the parliament chamber on Thursday (March 12). A sound system glitch during the national anthem in Bangladesh parliament created confusion among lawmakers during the 13th Jatiya Sangsad session.
As the president’s arrival was announced, opposition lawmakers began protesting inside the chamber holding placards. The announcement for the president’s speech was made by Speaker Major Hafiz Uddin Ahmed around 3:30 PM, prompting opposition MPs to stand and demonstrate, creating a tense atmosphere.
About ten minutes later, President Shahabuddin entered the parliament around 3:40 PM. According to parliamentary protocol, government party lawmakers stood up to show respect, while opposition members sat down as part of their protest.
Shortly afterward, the national anthem began playing. However, due to a malfunction in the chamber’s sound system, many lawmakers inside the hall failed to hear it immediately.
Video analysis later showed that opposition MP Hasnat Abdullah was the first to stand up during the anthem. Observers noted that he was wearing headphones, which may have allowed him to hear the anthem when others could not.
After his signal, other opposition lawmakers also stood up to show respect for the national anthem.
Parliament National Anthem Sound System Glitch Causes Confusion
Journalists present in the gallery reported that the sound system inside the parliament chamber was not functioning properly. According to sources at the parliament secretariat, the sound system had been damaged during the events of August 5 and although it was repaired, it has not yet been fully restored.
As a result, while the speech and anthem were clearly audible on television and online broadcasts, the sound inside the chamber and gallery was frequently disrupted. The session was even paused for a period due to these technical issues.
Observers believe the misunderstanding during the national anthem was primarily caused by the malfunctioning sound system rather than any deliberate act by lawmakers. The parliament national anthem sound system glitch sparked debate over technical preparedness in the parliament chamber
