“I Saw Them on the Battlefield”: Speaker Hafiz Defends Opposition Veterans

The Parliament Debate on Freedom Fighters took a dramatic turn on Tuesday (April 7) when State Minister for LGRD, Mir Shahe Alam, suggested that while the ruling party is filled with war veterans, the opposition benches are notably vacant of them. During the discussion on the President’s speech in the 13th National Parliament, the Minister claimed that his party holds the “trophies” of three major movements—the 1971 Liberation War, the 1990 Anti-Autocracy movement, and the July-August 2024 uprising. However, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad promptly countered this, specifically naming opposition MP Gazi Nazrul Islam (Satkhira-4) and stating, “There are freedom fighters in the opposition too; I have seen them myself on the battlefield.”

The Parliament Debate on Freedom Fighters also highlighted the historical claims of various parties. Minister Shahe Alam pointed out that while the Awami League mentions 1971 and 1990, they cannot claim credit for the July-August movement. Conversely, he argued the opposition lacks the legacy of the earlier two movements. He further noted that the current parliament’s leadership was instrumental in the recent political stability and the successful 2024 uprising, led by figures like Tarique Rahman.

Speaker Makes Special Recommendation for Sylhet-5

In another emotional segment of the Parliament Debate on Freedom Fighters, Sylhet-5 MP Mufti Mohammad Abul Hasan discussed the neglect of Zakiganj and Kanaighat—the country’s first liberated zones. Moved by the MP’s speech, Speaker Hafiz shared his personal combat memories from November 1971 in those areas. He even broke protocol to recommend that the Road Transport and Health Ministers prioritize these areas due to their significance and association with the late President Ziaur Rahman.
