Former US military officials and analysts have expressed concerns that the United States may launch potential ground operations aimed at seizing Iran’s strategic islands in the Persian Gulf. Such an operation, however, risks becoming a “death trap” for US troops. According to analysts, the logistics supply chains for US Marines and paratroopers in those locations would remain vulnerable, and the strategic objectives appear blurred. This information surfaced in a report by the UK-based media outlet Middle East Eye.
The Strategy and Challenges of Potential Invasion
The report suggests that any potential US offensive might begin with electronic warfare to disable Iran’s radar and defense systems, followed by massive airstrikes. However, the real challenge begins with the ground assault. Analysts believe the US might target strategic locations such as Kharg, Abu Musa, and Qeshm islands. Kharg is particularly vital as it handles most of Iran’s oil exports. Yet, the presence of tunnel networks, drones, and missiles on Qeshm Island could pose significant hurdles for the US military.
Logistics and ‘Mosaic Defense’ Risks
Former US Army officer Daniel Davis noted that while an airborne operation is the only realistic approach, troops landing via helicopters would be highly vulnerable to drones and light weaponry. Currently, about 2,500 Marines and 3,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division are stationed near the region. Experts emphasize that the US would need support from Gulf allies like Saudi Arabia or Kuwait; without it, the operation becomes nearly impossible. Furthermore, Iran’s ‘Mosaic Defense’—a decentralized system where local commanders act independently—could turn the occupied islands into a “shooting gallery” for US soldiers, making it difficult to sustain supplies and medical aid.
