A 20-year-old Brooklyn resident has been indicted for a violent attack on a Jewish man. The incident occurred at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station. Neil Hurlock faces multiple charges, including assault and robbery as hate crimes.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney, Hurlock followed the victim onto a train. The victim was identifiable by his religious clothing and was reading a religious text. Hurlock allegedly punched the man twice in the face and threw him onto seats.
During the brutal assault, the attacker allegedly used anti-Semitic slurs. He also forcibly removed the victim’s kippah before fleeing the scene. However, the suspect’s phone fell out of his pocket during the struggle. The victim used the phone to call the police immediately.
The victim was treated at a hospital for head swelling and hand cuts. Police tracked the phone number and arrested Hurlock a few days later. Although indicted, Hurlock was released and will appear in court this June.
District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated that such hate-fueled violence has no tolerance in Brooklyn. He emphasized that these crimes impact entire communities deeply. Statistics show Jews are targeted more than any other group in New York City.
