বাংলাA court in Faridpur has sentenced a 43-year-old woman, Tania Akter, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for detaining a 22-year-old woman at the Rathkhola brothel in Faridpur city. She was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional one-year non-rigorous imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday (September 3) by Shamima Parvin, judge and district and sessions judge of the Faridpur Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Crimes Prevention Tribunal.
Under another section of the same law, Tania was sentenced to an additional five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000, with three months of non-rigorous imprisonment in default. However, the two sentences will run concurrently, meaning she will serve the longer 10-year sentence.
Tania was present in court when the verdict was announced. She was later sent to Faridpur District Jail under police escort.
How the young woman was rescued
According to the case statement, the young woman from Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh worked at a garment factory in Savar, Dhaka. On March 18, 2022, Tania allegedly brought her to Faridpur by promising to take her from Dhaka to Mymensingh. She was later detained in a room at the Rathkhola brothel.
At around 1:30am on March 25, the woman called the Faridpur camp of RAB-10 and reported that she was being detained. RAB personnel conducted an operation that night and rescued her from the brothel.
After the rescue, RAB-10 Faridpur camp’s Naib Subedar Sheikh Israel Amin filed a human trafficking case against Tania as the sole accused at Faridpur Kotwali Police Station on the same day.
Sub-Inspector Prasad Kumar Chaki of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station investigated the case. After completing the investigation, he submitted a charge sheet against Tania as the sole accused on April 29, 2022.
Gholam Rabbani Bhuiyan, public prosecutor of the Faridpur Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Crimes Prevention Tribunal, confirmed the verdict. He said the sentence was handed down under Sections 6 and 11 of the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Prevention and Suppression Act, 2026.
Gholam Rabbani said they were satisfied with the verdict and hoped such exemplary punishment would help reduce human trafficking in the country. The human trafficking case highlights the legal action being taken against those accused of detaining vulnerable individuals.
