  • BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed has described threats to stop remittances sent by expatriate Bangladeshis as extremely anti-national and inhumane. He said remittances are a major driving force behind the national economy and support the livelihoods of millions of families. According to Rizvi, attempting to stop remittances for political purposes is tantamount to leaving people hungry.

He made the remarks on Friday, October 9, while speaking as the chief guest at an event held at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) auditorium of the University of Dhaka. The programme included an essay competition award ceremony, discussion and cultural activities focused on the life and work of former president Ziaur Rahman. Zia Smriti Pathagar and ‘Komol Kuri’ jointly organised the event.

Referring to recent disorder at an airport, Rizvi said people could protest against wrongdoing or mismanagement and hold press conferences. However, he said attacking officials on duty or others and creating disorder could not be justified. He criticised those who, he alleged, were using calls for a remittance shutdown to protect people involved in offences and gain political advantage.

Rizvi argued that politics should prioritise national interests over partisan interests. He referred to political events in 1971, 1986 and 2024, and claimed that the BNP had consistently placed the interests of the people and the country first.

Speaking about student politics and intellectual development, Rizvi said student activism should involve more than marches and slogans. Essay competitions and cultural activities, he said, help students develop their abilities and intellectual skills. He urged students to value hard work, knowledge and democratic practice, and called on Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal to become a centre for talent, learning and democratic values.

Reflecting on the 2024 mass uprising led by students and the public, Rizvi said the youth-led movement overturned the disappointment caused by repeated failures of movements between 2010 and 2024. He credited young people’s courage and leading role with contributing to the fall of what he described as authoritarian rule.

The event was chaired by Amanullah Aman, organisational secretary of the central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and convener of Komol Kuri. The programme was moderated by the organisation’s member secretary, engineer Habibur Rahman. Abdus Salam, administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation and a freedom fighter, spoke as the event’s inaugurator.

Special guests included Prime Minister’s political assistant Rashed Khan, BNP chairman’s adviser Baby Nazneen, MP Nilofer Chowdhury Moni, cultural affairs secretary Ashraful Uddin Ujjal, Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam Rakib, political analyst Rezaul Karim Rony and Zia Smriti Pathagar general secretary Zahir Dipti.

Rizvi’s remarks highlighted the role of remittances in supporting families and the national economy. The debate over a remittance shutdown therefore raises concerns about the potential effects on ordinary households and the country’s economic interests.
