বাংলাFormer Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice-president and government adviser Nurul Haque Nur has faced criticism on social media after questioning the decision to bury Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi beside national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. His question, “Who is Hadi?”, has brought Sharif Osman Hadi back into online discussions.
During a recent talk show on a private television channel, Nur said Hadi should not have been buried beside Kazi Nazrul Islam. He questioned Hadi’s contribution to the nation and suggested that the decision could be challenged in the future. His remarks triggered criticism across social media.
DUCSU Vice-President Sadik Kayem responded to Nur’s comments. A video featuring Nur’s remarks was shared on Kayem’s verified Facebook page alongside comments from ordinary people opposing cultural domination and expressing support for Sharif Osman Hadi.
Fatima Tasnim Juma, an Inqilab Moncho leader and DUCSU secretary for liberation war and democratic struggles, also criticised the remarks. In a Facebook post, she thanked expatriate Bangladeshis who had shared videos responding to the minister’s question and expressed their respect and affection for Hadi.
Sharif Osman Hadi was critically injured in a shooting in Bijoynagar, Dhaka, on December 12, 2025. After receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bangladesh, he was taken to Singapore. He died at Singapore General Hospital on December 18 while undergoing treatment.
Hadi was one of the organisers of the July 2024 mass uprising. After the uprising, he became widely known as the co-founder and spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, a political and cultural organisation. His opposition to Indian hegemony and involvement in the movement to ban the Awami League helped him gain recognition among sections of the younger generation.
The reaction to Nur’s comments has renewed online debate over Sharif Osman Hadi’s political and cultural legacy. Videos, posts and responses from supporters and critics continue to circulate on social media.
