Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has removed US Army Chief of Staff General Randy George. This move is part of a major reshuffle at the top level of the Pentagon. Two defense officials confirmed the report to Reuters on Thursday. The decision comes amid ongoing military tensions with Iran.
The Pentagon officially described the departure as a sudden “retirement.” General Randy George was the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army. He is retiring from his position effective immediately. His term was originally scheduled to end in late 2027.
Hegseth’s decision marks a significant shift in American military leadership. Reports suggest the administration wants leaders aligned with their specific vision. General Christopher LaNeve has been appointed as the acting Army Chief. LaNeve is a former military aide to Secretary Hegseth.
The Pentagon expressed gratitude for General George’s decades of service. However, no specific reason was provided for this abrupt dismissal. This firing is part of a wider string of senior military removals. Hegseth has already dismissed several top generals and admirals recently.
The restructuring occurs while the US is involved in a conflict with Iran. General George previously served under former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. His removal follows a series of clashes between the Pentagon chief and senior officers. The US military continues to ramp up its Middle East presence.
