At least 22 migrants, including 18 Bangladeshis, have died of exhaustion, hunger, and thirst while attempting to reach Europe from North Africa. Survivors rescued off the coast of Greece reported the Mediterranean Sea tragedy on Friday (March 27). The Greek Coast Guard, assisted by the EU border agency Frontex, rescued 26 individuals near the island of Crete, including one woman and a child.
The Grueling Journey from Libya
The ill-fated rubber boat reportedly set sail from Tobruk port in eastern Libya on March 21, heading toward Greece. After six days of drifting without food or water in harsh weather conditions, 22 passengers succumbed to extreme fatigue. According to the survivors, the bodies of the deceased were thrown into the sea following orders from the human traffickers. Among the deceased Bangladeshis, three have been identified as residents of Dirai Upazila in Sunamganj: Mujibur Rahman (45), Md. Nuruzzaman Sardar Moyna (30), and Md. Sahan (25).
Arrests and Legal Action
Greek authorities have arrested two South Sudanese suspects, aged 19 and 22, believed to be the traffickers. They are currently under investigation for illegal entry and negligent homicide. The survivors include 21 Bangladeshis, four South Sudanese nationals, and one individual from Chad. This Mediterranean Sea tragedy once again highlights the dangerous risks migrants take in pursuit of a better life in Europe.
