National Parliament Approves New Age Limit for BCS and Non-Cadre Government Jobs
In a landmark decision, the National Parliament of Bangladesh has officially passed a bill setting the maximum age limit for direct recruitment into government, autonomous, and statutory organizations at 32 years. On Sunday (April 5), the “Maximum Age Limit for Direct Recruitment in Government, Autonomous, Statutory Authorities, and Public Non-Financial Corporations Bill, 2026” was presented by the State Minister for Public Administration, Md. Abdul Bari. The bill was subsequently passed by a voice vote during a session presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, effectively standardizing the Job Entry Age Limit 32 policy across the nation.
According to the core provisions of the bill, the Job Entry Age Limit 32 will apply to all cadres of the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) and all non-cadre government positions. This also includes autonomous and statutory bodies where the previous age limit was set at 30 or below 32. This legislative move aims to provide educated unemployed youth with more opportunities to contribute to nation-building and to create a positive impact on the labor market. The bill replaces two previous ordinances issued in 2024 and 2025, giving them a permanent legal framework under the Job Entry Age Limit 32 act.
Protection for Existing Higher Age Limits and Specialized Services
The bill explicitly clarifies that the Job Entry Age Limit 32 will not reduce opportunities for positions that already have a higher age limit (such as 35, 40, or 45 years) in their respective recruitment rules. In such cases, the previous higher age limits will remain unchanged. Furthermore, the existing recruitment regulations for the Defense Services and Law Enforcement Agencies will continue as per their specific guidelines, independent of the Job Entry Age Limit 32 mandate. This ensures that technical complexities regarding specialized roles are fully addressed.
State Minister Md. Abdul Bari highlighted that this permanent law removes ambiguities created by earlier ordinances, particularly regarding specialized posts where higher age limits were accidentally impacted. With the passage of this bill, the government reinforces its commitment to youth empowerment.
