  • Police recovered the body of Mousumi Hijra, 52, who was known as a ‘Guruma’ among a section of the Hijra community, from her residence near the Ambagan Railway Colony in Chattogram’s Khulshi area. Police suspect that she may have been strangled.

The body of Mousumi Hijra was recovered around 10:30am on Saturday (September 5). Police said there were injury marks on her neck. Money kept at the residence and two mobile phones used by her were also reportedly missing.

After news of her death spread, members of the Hijra community gathered at the scene from different parts of the city. They claimed that the incident was a planned murder and staged a protest demanding that those responsible be identified and brought to justice.

Locals said Mousumi Hijra lived alone at the residence. She reportedly talked with neighbours until around 2am on Friday night before going to her room. In the early hours, residents of a nearby room heard sounds of an argument but did not consider the matter unusual, assuming she was talking to someone familiar.

When she did not wake up by around 10am, neighbours went to check on her and found the door open. She was found lying on the bed in her bedroom. The locals then informed police.

Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rahim said police went to the residence after receiving the report and recovered the body. He described Mousumi Hijra as a leader of the Hijra community. The body was sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report is received.

It was also learned that Mousumi had a cattle farm behind her residence. One of the cattle was sold on Friday, and the proceeds were reportedly in her possession. She was scheduled to buy another cow on Saturday morning. However, the money from the sale and her two mobile phones could not be found after the incident.

Police have begun investigating the death of Mousumi Hijra. The exact cause of death and those responsible will become clearer after the investigation and autopsy report.
