বাংলাRozi Akter Liza, 31, from Mahilara village in Gournadi, Barishal, died after undergoing surgery in Dhaka as part of a gender transition process. She died hours after the operation at Unihealth Specialized Hospital in Panthapath.
Liza’s death after surgery occurred early on September 6, following an operation performed on the afternoon of September 5. She had been admitted to the hospital on September 3 under the name ‘Sarfaraz’.
According to family members and local residents, Liza had preferred short hair and traditionally masculine clothing and behavior since childhood. Her mother said Liza had been married twice but did not continue either marriage.
Jenifa Akter, a close associate of Liza, said Liza had been receiving hormone therapy in Dhaka. The family reportedly provided Tk 150,000 for the surgery. Jenifa signed the surgical consent form identifying herself as Liza’s wife.
Liza’s father, freedom fighter Abdur Rab Hawlader, said he was unaware that she had been admitted under the name ‘Sarfaraz’ or that Jenifa had signed the consent form.
Liza’s mother, Fazila Begum, said the family had entrusted Jenifa with responsibilities related to the surgery. The hospital’s death certificate reportedly recorded Liza as being admitted under the male name ‘Sarfaraz’.
Hospital officials referred questions about the admission and treatment to the doctor responsible for admitting Liza. Attempts to obtain a detailed statement from the doctor were unsuccessful.
The exact medical cause of Liza’s death after surgery and whether any surgical complication occurred have not been independently confirmed. The hospital has not provided a detailed official statement on the matter.
