বাংলাThe 20th Asian Games will begin on September 19 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Bangladesh will compete in 22 disciplines, with medal hopes focused on kabaddi, archery, shooting and cricket.
At a press conference ahead of the Games, Bangladesh’s chef de mission Major Imroz Ahmed (retd.) said the country has medal expectations in four disciplines—kabaddi, archery, shooting and cricket. He also expressed hopes for good results in wushu, judo and karate.
Bangladesh will send a 260-member contingent, including 187 athletes and 73 officials. Large teams will compete in cricket, hockey, football, kabaddi, archery, shooting and several other disciplines.
Due to an accommodation shortage in Aichi-Nagoya, athletes from eight disciplines will stay on a cruise ship. Members of archery, gymnastics, judo, kabaddi, weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis and wushu will be accommodated there, while athletes from other disciplines will stay in hotels or resorts.
The Bangladesh flag at the opening ceremony will be carried by shooter Abdullah Hel Baki and karateka Humayra Akter Antora. Athletes with competitions immediately after the ceremony may not attend, as preparation will be given priority.
Bangladesh’s women’s football team is scheduled to play on September 14 and 17 and plans to arrive in Japan early. The women’s and men’s cricket teams and both hockey teams are also preparing ahead of the Games.
Responding to questions about the size of the contingent, chef de mission Imroz Ahmed said participation is not only about winning medals. International competitions also give athletes valuable experience and an opportunity to test their abilities.
Although medal hopes in four disciplines remain the main focus, Bangladesh also expects strong performances in several other sports. Monitoring teams are overseeing preparations, while athletes and officials have received guidance on anti-doping, safeguarding and competition manipulation.
