Former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has expressed deep disappointment over the team’s recent struggles and called for accountability from high-performance director Aqib Javed. He also voiced his support for Babar Azam amid the criticism surrounding the team.
Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Azhar strongly criticized the direction of Pakistan cricket. He said the team was once known for its unpredictability, but has now become consistently negative in its results and performances.
Azhar, who was part of Pakistan’s 2-2 Test series draw in England in 2016, said the country needs proper care and a long-term vision to restore public confidence. The former batter also expressed serious doubts about Pakistan’s chances in the final Test, saying the players’ body language did not suggest that the team was in a good position.
Azhar also questioned Aqib Javed’s role in the team’s recent struggles. According to him, a series of decisions over the past few years have produced disappointing results. He believes those responsible must be held accountable for the chaos in Pakistan cricket.
The former captain further criticized comments attributed to Aqib Javed regarding former Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam. Azhar argued that responsibility should not simply be shifted onto others, particularly when previous decisions involving them had been made only months earlier.
Azhar said that those unable to bring positive change to the game should be willing to step aside. He believes Pakistan cricket needs a clear, long-term plan to rebuild confidence among players, supporters and the wider public.
