  • Bangladesh’s dream of winning the gold medal at the Asian Games has ended. Despite a fighting total powered by Towhid Hridoy, Pakistan’s batting proved too strong as they won the men’s cricket semifinal by six wickets with nine balls remaining.

In Thursday’s semifinal in Nishin, Japan, Bangladesh scored 111 for 7 in their allotted 13 overs. Pakistan chased down the target in 11.3 overs, scoring 112 for 4 to secure their place in the final. Bangladesh will now play the third-place match for the bronze medal.

Towhid Hridoy Provides Bangladesh a Fighting Total

The match started around one hour and 15 minutes late because of a wet outfield rather than rain. As a result, seven overs were cut from each team’s innings, reducing the match to 13 overs per side.

Towhid Hridoy led Bangladesh’s batting effort with an excellent 42 off 25 balls, hitting two fours and four sixes. His aggressive innings was the main reason Bangladesh reached a competitive total of 111.

None of Bangladesh’s other batters managed a big score. Saif Hassan made 19 from 17 balls, while Mosaddek Hossain scored 11 from 16 balls. Mehedi Hasan remained unbeaten on 8 from four balls at the end.

    Pakistan Chase Down the Target

Pakistan initially came under pressure while chasing 112. Mehedi Hasan dismissed captain Sahibzada Farhan for one run, Nasum Ahmed removed Maaz Sadaqat for 1, and Rishad Hossain dismissed Usman Khan for 4.

Pakistan then took control of the chase. Saim Ayub scored 21 from 12 balls before being dismissed, while Hasan Nawaz and Abdul Samad accelerated the scoring. Hasan Nawaz finished unbeaten on 27 from 22 balls, while Abdul Samad struck an unbeaten 30 from just 15 balls.

Pakistan reached 112 in 11.3 overs to seal a six-wicket victory with nine balls remaining. Despite Towhid Hridoy‘s impressive innings, Bangladesh could not defend their total.

Bangladesh are now out of the gold-medal contest and will compete in the third-place match for the bronze medal at the Asian Games.
