  • Middle East Conflict and Bangladesh’s Energy Crisis: A Call for Restraint and Strategic Resilience

Special Report | Date: March 25, 2026 | Editor: Md. Mominul Islam

The escalating conflict across the Middle East is no longer a regional concern; it has become a global energy nightmare. With missile strikes targeting key oil and gas infrastructures for over three weeks, international analysts are warning of one of the most severe energy crises in history. As an import-dependent nation, Bangladesh is beginning to feel the tremors of this volatility.

    Ground Reality vs. Official Assurances

While the State Minister for Power and Energy, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, has assured the public of sufficient reserves, the situation at the grass-roots level remains tense. Reports of long queues at fuel stations and several pumps shutting down due to supply shortages have surfaced. The Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association has expressed deep concern regarding the current procurement levels. This disparity has led to panic-buying among consumers, further straining the already fragile distribution chain.

    The Need for Public Cooperation

In response to the crisis, the government has already initiated rationing measures. However, the success of these policies depends on the cooperation of the citizens. It is imperative that we adopt a culture of austerity in fuel and electricity consumption. Avoiding unnecessary usage and refraining from hoarding fuel are essential steps to stabilize the market. Simultaneously, the government must ensure that no opportunistic groups can create an artificial crisis for illicit profit.

    Long-term Vision

To safeguard our future, Bangladesh must pivot towards diversifying its energy basket. Relying solely on Middle Eastern imports makes our economy vulnerable to geopolitical shocks. Exploring renewable energy sources and accelerating domestic resource exploration must be prioritized in our long-term national strategy. Collective resilience is our strongest weapon against this global uncertainty.
