An alleged sexual assault of a minor in Madhabpur, Habiganj, was reportedly settled through a village arbitration instead of legal action. The minor assault case allegedly resulted in a Tk 90,000 fine, but the victim’s family reportedly received only Tk 20,000.
The incident reportedly occurred in Goalnagar village under Adair Union on August 20. According to the family and local sources, the girl was allegedly assaulted at home and later admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital. The family was preparing to seek legal action over the minor assault case when local influential people allegedly intervened.
A village arbitration meeting was held on August 26, reportedly mediated by local union council member Abedur Rahman Abed. Several local community figures were present, and a Tk 90,000 fine was reportedly imposed to settle the matter.
The victim’s mother said the family accepted the settlement because they feared they could not afford to pursue a case. She alleged that only Tk 20,000 was handed to them. The union council member acknowledged the arbitration and said the remaining amount would reportedly be paid later. No formal complaint has yet been filed regarding the minor assault case.
Lawyer Mozammel Haque Russel said an alleged rape is a serious criminal offense and cannot legally be resolved through village arbitration. Madhabpur Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Sohel Rana, said legal action would be taken if a written complaint is submitted. The minor assault case remains subject to further investigation.
