  • A shop named Comview Confectionery was destroyed in a fire at Laksam Railway Junction Market in Cumilla. The fire broke out at around 10pm on Sunday (August 30).

According to local residents, eyewitnesses and the affected shop owner, proprietor Mominul Islam had closed the shop around 8pm in accordance with government instructions and returned home. Later that night, a customer who came to the market to buy medicine noticed the fire and quickly called the national emergency service at 999.

A team from Laksam Fire Service arrived at the scene and began efforts to control the blaze. With help from local residents, firefighters brought the fire under control after nearly an hour. By then, everything inside the shop had been destroyed. However, their quick response prevented the fire from spreading to nearby shops. The Laksam Junction Market fire was contained before causing a larger disaster, according to locals.

Because the affected shop is located beside the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway, traffic was temporarily disrupted while fire service vehicles and equipment were used. Traffic resumed after the situation returned to normal about an hour later.

Shop owner Md Mominul Islam is now facing severe financial difficulties after losing his business. He estimated that cash, merchandise, furniture and other property worth around Tk 15 lakh were destroyed. He said restarting the business after losing his savings, loans and working capital would be difficult.

Local BNP leaders Majir Ahmed and Md Mosharraf Hossain Mishu visited the site and assured the affected businessman of support. Local business owners have also called for assistance from affluent individuals, representatives and relevant authorities.

Laksam Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Inspector Md Manjurul Islam said an electrical short circuit was initially suspected as the cause. However, the exact cause of the Laksam Junction Market fire will be known after an investigation.
