বাংলাA woman in Chakaria has filed a criminal case against five people, alleging that her family was induced into arranging her marriage with her late husband’s brother and that money and gold were taken from them. The case has raised serious questions over alleged kabinnama forgery.
According to the case documents, Sumi Akter is a mother of two. After her husband’s death, her in-laws proposed that she marry her brother-in-law, Azizur Rahman, who lives in Malaysia. She initially opposed the proposal but later agreed following pressure and persuasion from family members.
The complaint states that an attempt was made to prepare a marriage document on November 29, 2021, at a residence in Kutubdiapara, Cox’s Bazar municipality. Sumi and witnesses allegedly signed the document, while she was told that Azizur would sign it from Malaysia and send it back.
The complaint further alleges that Tk 2 lakh, Tk 70,000, Tk 2.5 lakh and one bhori of gold were taken at different times in connection with the marriage. Several months later, Sumi allegedly received a kabinnama containing Azizur’s purported signature.
After becoming suspicious, Sumi reportedly asked to see the original balam register. She alleges that the concerned registrar did not show it to her and left the premises. She was later given another alleged copy of the marriage document. These circumstances have fueled the kabinnama forgery allegations.
One of the accused is Kazi Mohammad Nur Elahi, a Nikah and divorce registrar. He previously claimed that his signature had been forged and that his son conducted the marriage. This has raised questions about how the signature and seal were allegedly used and where the purported marriage registration took place.
According to the case documents, Nur Elahi is the Nikah and divorce registrar for East Barabheola Union, while Sumi’s in-laws live in Morangghona of Konakhali Union. The discrepancy may be relevant to the investigation into the kabinnama forgery allegations.
Sumi has also alleged that she was confined and assaulted at the accused persons’ residence after raising concerns about the kabinnama and the money and gold. Her family reportedly rescued her with police assistance on August 16, 2025.
The case was filed before the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court in Cox’s Bazar. Azizur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman, Nur Nahar Begum, Hasina Begum and Kazi Mohammad Nur Elahi have been named as accused. The case cites several sections of Bangladesh’s Penal Code, including Sections 466, 467, 468, 406, 420 and 34. However, filing a case does not establish guilt; the allegations must be determined through investigation and judicial proceedings.
Sumi’s lawyer, Advocate Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, said the case is ongoing and seeks to establish the facts and protect the alleged victim’s legal rights. Investigators may examine the original balam register, kabinnama, signatures, seals and statements of witnesses to determine the truth behind the kabinnama forgery allegations.
