বাংলাAn alleged attempt was made to take a female student of Jagannath University (JnU) from a student hostel in Kaltabazar, Old Dhaka, by people identifying themselves as members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The student was not taken away after university teachers and the proctorial team intervened at the scene.
The incident took place early Sunday (September 6) at a female student hostel in a lane off Johnson Road. The student, Mamataz Ara Barsha, is from the 2015-16 academic session of JnU’s Department of Drama. She spoke about the attempt to detain JnU student at a press conference later in the day.
Barsha alleged that her sister’s former husband, Sumon Mia, had attempted to use a RAB identity to take her away because of a family dispute. She said her younger sister and Sumon divorced in May and that he had allegedly harassed and threatened her family afterward.
Hostel resident Meghla Akter said several people arrived around 5:45 a.m., identifying themselves as RAB members. They initially said they had come to arrest an accused person in a case and later said they wanted to search the hostel. Barsha was eventually taken toward a RAB vehicle before university authorities and police were informed.
University teachers and the proctorial team later reached the scene and spoke with those involved. Assistant Proctor Ahmed Ihsanul Kabir said that if there was any complaint or case against the student, it should be handled through proper legal procedures. The attempt to detain JnU student has drawn attention to student safety and due process.
Officer-in-Charge of Sutrapur Police Station Md Matiur Rahman said the people at the scene were RAB members who had come to take the student in connection with a case. Police later learned that the matter involved a family dispute. The RAB members left without taking the student. Barsha has expressed concern about her safety following the incident. A statement from her sister’s former husband, Sumon Mia, was not immediately available. The full circumstances surrounding the attempt to detain JnU student may become clearer through the relevant legal process.
