US officials said the two envoys began their Kyiv visit on Sunday. During their meeting with Putin on Saturday, they discussed what the White House described as an important plan for the next steps toward ending the war. The White House also expressed hope for an equally productive meeting in Ukraine.
The details of the proposed plan remain unclear. The White House said an announcement could come within the next few weeks. The latest diplomatic push is aimed at strengthening US mediation efforts to end the Ukraine war.
This is the first visit to Kyiv by Trump administration’s top negotiators. After coming to office with a pledge to end the war quickly, the Trump administration has recently intensified diplomatic efforts to encourage an agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Amid continued tensions, the Russian and Ukrainian presidents have also agreed to halt attacks on each other’s capitals for three days. The temporary pause could create new opportunities for peace discussions over the Ukraine war, although fighting continues on other fronts.
Major disagreements over territory, security guarantees and the future security framework remain significant obstacles. Despite the renewed diplomatic activity, ending the Ukraine war is likely to require further difficult negotiations between the two sides.
