  • Two years after the death of Cumilla University student Abdul Kaiyum during the July Movement, his family continues to struggle financially and emotionally. According to his parents, Abdul Kaiyum was the family’s greatest hope.

Abdul Kaiyum was shot on August 5, 2024, during the “Long March to Dhaka” program and died the following day while undergoing treatment. His parents now live in a rented house in Savar, relying on a government allowance.

His mother said Abdul Kaiyum supported the family through private tutoring, small businesses, and other income sources while continuing his studies. His dream was to complete his education and build a better future for his parents.

The family says they have yet to see meaningful progress in the legal process. They seek justice for Abdul Kaiyum but insist that no innocent person should be punished.

Cumilla University has provided financial assistance and named one of its student halls after Abdul Kaiyum. However, his parents say no support can replace the loss of their son.
