The government has expanded the mobile allowance for government employees. Previously, only employees in Grade 5 were eligible, but employees across all grades will now come under the mobile allowance scheme, considering internet and digital communication expenses.
The National Pay Scale 2026 was approved at a cabinet meeting held on Monday, August 31. According to a press release from the Ministry of Finance, all grades of government employees will now be covered by the mobile allowance under the new pay scale.
Previously, the benefit was applicable only to Grade 5 employees. Under the National Pay Scale 2026, the government has decided to extend the mobile allowance to employees of all grades.
The National Pay Scale 2026 will be implemented for government employees in phases from July 1, 2026. Considering the financial implications of implementing the pay scale and its potential impact on overall inflation, the government plans to implement it gradually over the 2026-27 and 2027-28 fiscal years.
Approximately 2.4 million military and civilian employees, along with more than 900,000 retired employees and other eligible beneficiaries, are expected to benefit from the new pay scale. The expansion of the mobile allowance is intended to account for the growing costs of digital communication.
