বাংলাThe Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has expressed interest in supporting the improvement of higher education and research at the University of Dhaka. Discussions on JICA support for DU research took place during a meeting between a JICA delegation and the university’s vice-chancellor on Tuesday.
The six-member delegation was led by JICA representative Nishi Rizuki and included an emeritus professor from Kumamoto University and senior JICA officials. The delegation presented a draft proposal titled “Potential Yen Loan Project for Supporting Higher Education in Bangladesh.”
The meeting emphasized strengthening links between education and industry and developing joint research programs between the University of Dhaka and universities in Japan. Such initiatives could expand JICA support for DU research and academic collaboration.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam welcomed the initiative and said further Japanese support was needed for laboratory-based education in areas including artificial intelligence, biology, software engineering, pharmacy and environmental science.
The vice-chancellor also sought JICA assistance for “lab-to-lab” joint programs between universities in Bangladesh and Japan. Financial support for maintaining equipment at university research laboratories was also requested. Expanded JICA support for DU research could strengthen research capacity and create new opportunities for students and researchers.
Senior officials and faculty members from several faculties, departments and research centers of the University of Dhaka attended the meeting. The participants also discussed expanding research cooperation between universities in the two countries, with JICA support for DU research potentially playing an important role.
