বাংলাBangladesh has called for effective leadership and meaningful participation of women in efforts to establish sustainable peace and security. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam made the call while representing Bangladesh at the annual ministerial meeting of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and was co-organized by the Philippines, Italy and UN Women. The discussions focused on implementation and accountability under the WPS agenda and women’s participation in global peace and security efforts.
Shama Obaid Islam highlighted the need for greater participation of women in peacekeeping, peacebuilding and recovery processes. She also called for the Women, Peace and Security agenda to be integrated into climate action and humanitarian assistance.
She also stressed stronger accountability for violence and other violations against women. The Bangladeshi representative reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring meaningful and influential participation of women in national and international decision-making processes.
Bangladesh is also advancing work on its second national action plan on Women, Peace and Security. The government began the process of developing a new five-year WPS National Action Plan earlier in September 2026.
Shama Obaid Islam also highlighted the Bangladesh-led Dhaka Dialogue, which addresses digital harassment and AI-enabled abuse against women. She invited member states to join the forthcoming Group of Friends related to the initiative.
The WPS Focal Points Network is placing particular emphasis in 2026 on implementation and accountability, marking the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The network’s annual ministerial meeting in New York formed part of those efforts.
