In a historic political development, Nepal’s former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was arrested on Saturday (March 28) from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur. The arrest comes just 24 hours after the new Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, took his oath of office. Oli has been taken into custody in connection with the deadly “Gen-Z” anti-corruption protests that rocked the nation last year, resulting in the deaths of over 70 people, including at least 19 minors.
Accountability for the Gen-Z Massacre
Alongside Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak was also detained by Nepal Police. The arrests follow the first cabinet meeting chaired by Balendra Shah, which decided to immediately implement the findings of a high-level investigation commission. The commission’s report holds Oli and Lekhak responsible for negligence during the September 2025 protests. Although no direct order to shoot was found, the report highlights their failure to control the violence, recommending up to 10 years of imprisonment for high-ranking officials involved.
“No One is Above the Law” – New Government’s Stance
Nepal’s new Home Minister, Sudan Gurung, confirmed the arrests via social media, stating that “a promise is a promise” and emphasizing that the arrests are not an act of revenge but the beginning of justice. However, KP Sharma Oli has termed his arrest as “politically motivated” and vowed to fight a legal battle. The Gen-Z protests, which initially started over a social media ban, eventually led to the fall of Oli’s government and a brief interim period led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki.
