  • Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury stated that a decision regarding fuel prices might be announced soon. While there is no immediate shortage, the high cost of oil and gas imports is becoming a significant concern for the national budget. The Minister shared these updates during a scholarship distribution program at KEPZ, Chattogram, on Friday.

Minister Amir Khosru emphasized that the government’s primary goal is to ensure energy security at any cost. He warned that if fuel supplies are disrupted, agricultural and industrial production would come to a standstill. To manage the financial pressure, the government has already implemented a 30% fuel rationing policy for ministers and government officials.

Energy Security Remains Top Priority Amid Global Crisis

The ongoing war in the Middle East has severely impacted the global supply chain. Bangladesh, which relies heavily on the region for energy imports, is facing increasing challenges. The Minister noted that while the supply chain is currently active, the government is sourcing fuel at high prices from various international markets to maintain stability.

The Minister urged citizens to be more economical in energy consumption. He highlighted that the fuel crisis is not unique to Bangladesh; even countries like the USA are struggling. Continuous communication with international partners is being maintained to secure the energy needs of the nation during this volatile period.

    Investment and Economic Policy Adjustments

Beyond energy, the Minister discussed the importance of shifting toward equity-based investments rather than relying solely on bank loans. This move aims to create a more stable environment for investors in Bangladesh. He assured that the government is working to keep the overall supply chain of essential goods intact despite global hurdles.

The event was chaired by CIU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. M. Nurul Absar. Kihak Sung, Chairman of Youngone Corporation and KEPZ, was also present as a special guest. The Minister concluded by asking for public cooperation to tackle these economic challenges collectively.
