Bangladesh’s government pay structure began with a minimum basic salary of Tk 130 in 1973. More than five decades later, the newly approved National Pay Scale 2026 has raised the minimum starting salary to Tk 20,000, marking a major transformation in Bangladesh government salaries.
The country introduced its first national pay scale in 1973 during the post-independence reconstruction period. Since then, the salary structure has been revised several times, leading to the latest ninth national pay scale.
Under the second pay scale in 1977, the minimum basic salary rose to Tk 225. It later increased to Tk 500 in 1985 and Tk 900 in 1991, reflecting gradual changes in Bangladesh government salaries.
The minimum salary was raised to Tk 1,500 under the 1997 pay scale. It increased again to Tk 2,400 in 2005 and reached Tk 4,100 under the 2009 national pay scale.
The eighth National Pay Scale, introduced in 2015, raised the minimum basic salary from Tk 4,100 to Tk 8,250. The highest Grade 1 basic salary was also increased from Tk 40,000 to Tk 78,000, significantly changing Bangladesh government salaries.
The National Pay Scale 2026 has set the starting basic salary for Grade 20 at Tk 20,000. The fixed basic salary for Grade 1 has been raised to Tk 156,000, taking the highest level of Bangladesh government salaries beyond Tk 100,000 for the first time.
The lowest grade receives a 142 percent increase under the new structure, while the highest grade sees a 100 percent increase. The revised scale retains the existing 20-grade structure.
From Tk 130 in 1973 to Tk 20,000 in 2026, the evolution of Bangladesh government salaries reflects more than five decades of changes in the economy, inflation, living costs and public-sector compensation.
