বাংলাPolice have arrested National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Zahid Munshi in Gazipur’s Kaliganj over allegations of repeatedly sexually assaulting a college student after promising marriage.
Zahid Munshi, 26, was the joint member secretary of the NCP’s Kaliganj upazila unit. Following the filing of the case, he was temporarily relieved of his party membership, organizational responsibilities and posts, according to the party.
According to the case statement, the student first became acquainted with Zahid around four months ago after visiting his shop in the Munshefpur area to buy a watch. The complaint alleges that their relationship later developed and that Zahid subsequently took her to different places on the promise of marriage and sexually assaulted her.
The complaint also alleges that the accused threatened to spread private photos and videos on social media. The student allegedly faced further abuse after pressing him to marry her. The case statement also mentions claims concerning Zahid’s previous marriages and a child.
The victim’s elder sister filed the case at Kaliganj Police Station on September 14. Police later arrested Zahid Munshi and sent him to court.
NCP Gazipur district convener M. M. Shoaib said Zahid had been temporarily relieved of all organizational positions after serious allegations were brought against him. Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed the arrest and court proceedings.
The allegations remain subject to the judicial process, and the accused’s response was not available when media outlets attempted to contact him.
