Diplomacy in Motion: Islamabad Peace Talks Under Pakistan’s Mediation
The Islamabad Peace Talks have gained significant momentum as the Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, prepares to leave for Pakistan this Thursday night. Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, confirmed the news via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Despite recent ceasefire violations by Israel, which Moghadam claims are attempts to derail diplomatic efforts, Iran has accepted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s invitation. The discussions will center on a 10-point proposal submitted by Tehran as a counter to the revised 15-point plan previously sent by Washington. These talks represent the most substantial diplomatic breakthrough since hostilities broke out on February 28.
The core of the Islamabad Peace Talks revolves around a two-tier peace plan. Initially, the U.S. proposed a 45-day truce, which Iran counter-proposed as a 14-day immediate ceasefire to test the sincerity of the participants. The Iranian 10-point demand, already handed over to Washington via Islamabad, will be the primary focus of the session scheduled for April 10, 2026. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the U.S. delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance, signaling the high stakes involved in these negotiations. The international community is closely watching if Pakistan’s role as a bridge can finally end the “persistent threat” in the Middle East.
A Shift from Battlefield to Table
The Islamabad Peace Talks come at a critical juncture where the risk of global escalation is at its peak. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been actively engaging with both sides since mid-March, attempting to narrow the gap between Washington’s demands and Tehran’s security concerns. While the Iranian people remain skeptical due to ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, the presence of Ghalibaf and Vance in the same room is seen as a major milestone. If successful, this summit could pave the way for a permanent cessation of hostilities and a new geopolitical framework for the region.
