Long-term Roadmap: Minister Outlines Education Nationalization Process
In a parliamentary session on Wednesday (April 8, 2026), Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milan addressed the highly anticipated issue of Education Nationalization. Responding to a written query from MP Md. Selim Bhuiyan, the Minister clarified that the process of nationalizing private colleges and schools follows specific directives from the Prime Minister. He emphasized that once a policy decision is adopted, the terms of service for teachers and staff are reviewed under existing regulations to facilitate their transition into the government sector. The session, presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikrom, highlighted that this remains a priority for the current administration’s educational reform agenda.
The Minister noted that Education Nationalization is a complex, long-term policy matter that involves more than just the Ministry of Education. It is directly tied to the country’s overall financial capacity, existing legal frameworks, and the national budget. Currently, there are 34,129 private educational institutions across Bangladesh, employing nearly 600,000 teachers and over 200,000 staff members. Milan explained that the government must carefully evaluate the economic impact before moving forward with a wholesale nationalization of such a massive workforce, ensuring that the transition is sustainable for the national treasury.
Statistics and Institutional Breakdown
Providing a detailed breakdown under the Education Nationalization framework, the Minister shared that there are 18,578 private schools with 265,678 teachers. Additionally, 2,738 colleges employ 86,646 teachers, while 9,293 madrasas have 164,371 teachers. Technical and vocational sectors also hold a significant share with 2,027 institutions. The Minister’s speech has sparked hope among hundreds of thousands of educators who have been demanding job security and equal benefits. He concluded by reaffirming that the Ministry is ready to implement the necessary steps as soon as the broader government policy is greenlit.
