বাংলাA college teacher in Lalmonirhat has allegedly been brutally attacked after speaking out against online gambling. Ariful Islam, 32, has remained unconscious for eight days and is currently receiving treatment in the ICU of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The incident reportedly took place on August 1 in Gandhamarua area of Durgapur Union under Aditmari upazila. Ariful Islam is a teacher at Lalmonirhat Government Technical School and College.
According to the case statement, a group had allegedly been operating online gambling and casino activities in the area for a long time. Several local residents reportedly became financially ruined after becoming involved in gambling.
As a concerned citizen, Ariful Islam had spoken out against the activities and warned the alleged operators that he would inform police if they did not stop. The case statement alleges that he was attacked while returning home from college because of this objection.
The attackers allegedly beat him with iron rods and used sharp weapons to injure him in several parts of his body, including his head. Locals rescued him and took him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later transferred to Dhaka.
His father, Abu Bakkar Siddique, said Ariful suffered severe blood loss and has been fighting for his life for the past eight days. Doctors have described his condition as critical.
A case has been filed at Aditmari Police Station naming 10 people, including six alleged online gambling and casino operators. The family says no accused has been arrested even seven days after the case was filed.
Aditmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmus Sakib Sajib said a case had been filed by the injured teacher’s father and that legal action would be taken following an investigation.
