বাংলাBangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that modern drone technology is playing an increasingly important role in border protection and disaster response. He highlighted the growing importance of drones in border security for monitoring difficult and remote areas.
He made the remarks after inaugurating the Border School of Surveillance and Drone Warfare at the BGB Sylhet Sector headquarters on Tuesday.
The minister said that maintaining security through direct manpower is extremely difficult in remote and densely forested border regions. Night-vision and thermal-equipped drones in border security will therefore be used for continuous digital surveillance.
According to him, thermal technology can help monitor suspicious activities even at night. It can also assist authorities in identifying routes used for smuggling, narcotics and illegal weapons, making drones in border security an important technological tool.
He also noted that the Border Guard Bangladesh has successfully used drones in rescue operations and for delivering relief supplies to highly inaccessible areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The new training institution is currently focused on training BGB personnel in surveillance and drone warfare. The government plans to expand the programme in the future to develop civilian expertise in advanced technology and drone operations.
The minister said that more advanced technology will gradually be introduced over the next one to two years to strengthen the country’s overall capabilities. The expansion of drones in border security is expected to enhance surveillance and operational readiness.
Following the inauguration, the minister visited the drone school complex and display centre and observed an operational exercise and dynamic drone demonstration conducted by the BGB, showcasing the potential of drones in border security.
