  • Jagpa senior vice chairman Rashed Prodhan has expressed regret over his controversial remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, following widespread political backlash.

Speaking at a press conference in Dhaka’s Paltan area, he explained that the term “kulangar” was misinterpreted by a section of BNP supporters, which led to heightened tensions.

Addressing the controversial remarks on Prime Minister, he elaborated that the word “kulangar” refers to a person whose actions bring disgrace upon their family lineage.

According to him, misunderstanding of this term triggered emotional reactions among BNP supporters.

Despite defending his political stance, he acknowledged the hurt caused and formally apologized, assuring that he would refrain from using such expressions in the future.

Prodhan reiterated that he had consistently criticized BNP’s current leadership, arguing that it no longer reflects the ideals of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. He maintained that the controversial remarks on Prime Minister were part of political criticism rather than personal attack.

He noted that similar statements in the past did not provoke strong reactions, but the inclusion of a specific term in his April 15 speech intensified public discourse.

Following the statement, protests, rallies, and symbolic demonstrations were organized by BNP supporters across various regions. He described these actions as part of democratic expression.

However, he raised concerns over incidents where his residence was surrounded and party offices were attacked, calling such actions alarming.

He also referred to attacks on Jagpa offices in Panchagarh, drawing parallels with earlier incidents of political violence.

During the press conference, he presented six detailed clarifications:

1/ He stated that his বক্তব্য was made strictly in his personal and party capacity as a Jagpa representative, and has no connection with any 11-party alliance. Claims linking it to other রাজনৈতিক জোট are incorrect.

2/ He alleged that his phone number was circulated on social media, leading to abusive calls and death threats. He emphasized that he is not intimidated by such threats and considers his life to be determined by divine will.

3/ He complained that even his spouse, who is not involved in politics, was targeted through online harassment, which he described as unacceptable.

4/ He said his late grandfather, a former Speaker during the Pakistan era, was being labeled unfairly, despite no such allegations historically.

5/ He defended his late father, Shafiul Alam Prodhan, stating that historical records prove his role in the liberation struggle, rejecting claims labeling him otherwise.

6/ He also rejected allegations linking his father to past হত্যাকাণ্ড, stating that senior BNP leaders themselves had previously termed such claims false.

Reiterating the issue, he said the controversial remarks on Prime Minister should be viewed within the framework of political debate, and called for a respectful democratic environment.
