Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed on March 29 that he has ordered the military to expand its operations in southern Lebanon. In a post on X, Netanyahu stated, “I have just instructed to expand even further the existing security zone.” Military operations have intensified between Israeli forces and Hezbollah along the border since the start of Operation Epic Fury on February 28.
Restoring Security to the North
“We are determined to change the situation in the north from its roots and restore security to the residents,” Netanyahu said. He emphasized that Israel will not tolerate ongoing threats to its settlements and will continue to act with strength until their goals are achieved. However, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the move, calling the creation of a buffer zone a “flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty.”
Casualties and Humanitarian Impact
The escalation has taken a heavy toll, with the Lebanese Health Ministry reporting 1,142 deaths between March 2 and March 27, including 122 children. More than 3,300 people have been injured, and over a million—roughly 15 percent of Lebanon’s population—have fled their homes. A recent airstrike in Jezzine killed three journalists, including Ali Shoeib, whom Israel accused of being a Hezbollah operative. Additionally, the WHO reported that 51 health workers have been killed since the conflict escalated, prompting Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to call for an immediate end to attacks on health facilities.
