বাংলাMore than 900 workers have been trapped in tunnels at the Trishuli hydropower project following severe flash floods in Nepal last week. The Nepal Army has intensified efforts to clear mud, rocks and debris and rescue the workers. The hydropower tunnel worker rescue operation includes controlled blasts and heavy excavation equipment.
Flash floods completely blocked tunnel entrances at several hydropower projects with deep layers of mud, rocks and debris. Rescue teams are working to reopen access points and reach workers believed to remain inside.
Some workers managed to escape after the floods, but several hundred are still reportedly trapped. Rescue officials fear oxygen levels could fall quickly because some tunnels remain filled with mud and water, making the hydropower tunnel worker rescue operation increasingly urgent.
Nepal’s Ministry of Energy said rescuing the trapped workers is currently the top priority. Technical assistance is also being provided by specialist teams from India and China. However, the risk of additional landslides and forecasts of further rain are making the rescue operation highly challenging.
Around 11 hydropower projects in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts have been affected. Across Nepal and Tibet, more than 919 deaths have been confirmed, while the number of missing people has reached 4,793, including 592 foreign nationals. The hydropower tunnel worker rescue effort continues amid difficult conditions.
Rescuers are continuing to remove debris and reopen tunnel entrances. Despite the risks posed by the mountainous terrain and adverse weather, teams are making every effort to reach the trapped workers. The hydropower tunnel worker rescue operation remains a major priority in the disaster response.
