Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone who creates an artificial shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and sells it at excessive prices. He made the remarks during a weekly press briefing.
Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman said there have been instances of attempts to raise prices despite the availability of LPG supplies and stocks in some areas. The government is closely monitoring whether anyone is deliberately creating an artificial shortage through illegal stockpiling.
He said reports have appeared in the media about the rising LPG price despite adequate supply or stock in some places. Relevant operators have been urged not to create artificial shortages through illegal hoarding, while operators have assured the minister of their cooperation. The government is maintaining strict surveillance and will take necessary action if required.
The country is currently facing pressure on LPG supply and prices. Reports indicate that LPG imports have declined by around 25 percent in one month, leading to concerns over supply shortages.
Taking advantage of the situation, there have been allegations that 12-kilogram LPG cylinders are being sold at prices Tk 400 to Tk 500 higher than the rate set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC). As a result, the retail LPG price has crossed Tk 2,000 in some places.
BERC has set the price of a 12-kilogram LPG cylinder at Tk 1,585. However, the same cylinder is reportedly being sold for Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,100 in some areas, increasing the financial burden on consumers.
Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman has previously spoken at government briefings about the country’s energy situation, fuel prices and market management. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
