  • The government has announced a reward of up to 1 lakh BDT for anyone providing accurate information to the local administration regarding the illegal fuel hoarding and smuggling of fuel oil. The Energy and Mineral Resources Division issued a press release on Monday (March 30) confirming this significant move to curb black marketing during the ongoing global energy crisis.

Global Economic Turmoil and Fuel Market Impact

Although the primary battlegrounds of the Iran-Israel and United States conflict are currently centered in Middle Eastern nations, the global economy has become entirely unstable as a result. Every day, the price of fuel oil in the international market is climbing, alongside a sharp rise in the costs of container and goods transportation by sea. Bangladesh’s import-export trade is not exempt from this volatility, creating a challenging environment for illegal fuel hoarding syndicates.

Government’s Stance on Domestic Fuel Prices

Despite the rapid surge of oil prices in the international market, the ruling BNP government has maintained domestic prices at previous levels without implementing an increase. However, despite this stability in pricing, long queues of motorcycles and cars have been observed at various fuel pumps across the capital and other parts of the country for several days. These supply concerns related to illegal fuel hoarding have even led to unpleasant incidents in some locations.

    Reporting and Reward Mechanism

To tackle these artificial shortages and ensure smooth distribution, the government is incentivizing public cooperation. By offering a reward of up to 1 lakh BDT, the authorities aim to encourage citizens to report illegal fuel hoarding activities directly to local administrations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to stabilize the energy sector and protect consumers from the negative impacts of global geopolitical tensions and local smuggling rings.
