বাংলাThe Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has started verifying the asset declarations submitted by former Bangladesh Army Chief General (retd.) Aziz Ahmed and his wife, Dilshad Nahar Kakoli.
The commission has appointed an investigation officer to examine whether the declared assets match their actual assets and whether there are any discrepancies in the submitted information. The decision was reportedly taken at the ACC headquarters on Sunday (September 6).
A letter signed by ACC Deputy Director Md Zakaria instructed Assistant Director Md Sazzad Hossain to review the asset declarations and related documents and submit a report quickly. A total of 31 pages of documents, including Aziz Ahmed’s original asset declaration, were attached to the letter.
The same investigation team has also been assigned to verify the asset declaration of his wife, Dilshad Nahar Kakoli. Her original declaration and related documents comprise 14 pages.
Former Army Chief Aziz Ahmed has previously faced allegations of corruption and irregularities. In May 2024, the US State Department announced restrictive measures against him over alleged corruption-related activities.
In September 2024, the ACC decided to investigate allegations of illegal assets, money laundering and other irregularities involving Aziz Ahmed and his two brothers, Haris Ahmed and Tofail Ahmed Joseph.
The ACC investigation also includes allegations involving properties, houses, flats, land and other assets allegedly acquired by former Army Chief Aziz Ahmed and people linked to him.
An investigative report by Al Jazeera in 2021 also raised allegations concerning Haris Ahmed’s identity, passports, overseas business and assets, as well as his links with Aziz Ahmed.
The current ACC inquiry will determine whether former Army Chief Aziz Ahmed and his wife’s declared assets correspond with their actual assets and whether any irregularities are present.
