বাংলাA Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for popular television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Mohammad Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in connection with a case filed over the alleged abetment of his wife Afra Evnat Ikra’s suicide. The order was issued on Wednesday by Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir.
The investigating officer, Inspector Md. Abdul Malek of the Detective Branch’s Mirpur Division, sought a 10-day remand to interrogate the actor. According to the application, further questioning was necessary to uncover the facts surrounding the incident and gather crucial evidence related to the case. After hearing both sides, the court approved a two-day remand.
Earlier, on June 18, Zaher Alvi surrendered before the court and filed a bail petition through his lawyers. However, the court rejected the plea and ordered him to be sent to jail pending further proceedings.
According to the case statement, Afra Evnat Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck at her residence in Mirpur DOHS on February 28. Family members and neighbors rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Later that night, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case alleging that prolonged family disputes, mental pressure, and various forms of abuse had driven his daughter to take her own life. The allegations became the basis of the criminal investigation.
Zaher Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, was also named in the case. She surrendered before the court on June 4 and was subsequently granted bail. The incident has attracted significant attention from both the entertainment industry and the general public.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives hope that questioning the actor during remand will help clarify key aspects of the case and assist in determining whether any criminal liability exists. A final investigation report will be submitted to the court upon completion of the inquiry.
