  • A helicopter used for the ‘Flying Doctor’ service has crashed near an airport in Malaysia’s Borneo region. Five people, including medical personnel, were aboard the helicopter when the incident occurred on Tuesday. No deaths have been confirmed so far.

Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said in a statement that preliminary information indicated there was one pilot and four Health Ministry staff members on board. They included a medical officer, an assistant medical officer and two nurses.

The Flying Doctor service generally uses aircraft or helicopters to deliver medical care, emergency patient transport and other clinical services to remote and hard-to-reach areas.

Dzulkefly said the condition of the crew and passengers, as well as the cause of the crash, had not yet been confirmed. A search and rescue operation is underway in coordination with firefighting and medical authorities.

Malaysia’s civil aviation authority said the crash was reported on Tuesday afternoon local time near the short take-off and landing airport in Long Lelang, Sarawak.

The country’s Transport Ministry’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Rescue operations are continuing as authorities gather more information about the helicopter used for the Flying Doctor service.
