Temascalcingo is located about 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. Authorities have not yet determined what caused the explosion.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico has launched an investigation into the incident. A local resident said two priests were among those injured.
A video shared on social media showed people moving through smoke and debris at the scene as they searched for survivors after the explosion.

Mexico has experienced other fireworks-related accidents in the past. About four years ago, a powerful fireworks explosion in a village in the municipality of Huejutla, Hidalgo state, injured 17 people.
